An Analysis Of a Child's Drawing

Pam is 2 years and 9 months old, and behaves very violently. Her parents have stopped inviting her friends to play at home because they are ashamed of her behavior. In one incident, she attacked another child, slamming his head against the floor. Her kindergarten teacher told her parents that things are the same in the kindergarten and that the other children keep away from her. Her parents are afraid and do not understand what leads to their daughter's behavior.

Understanding the drawing

Based on Pam's drawings – one of which is presented here – we are able to see that she is full of presence and self-confidence. These characteristics are reflected in her fluent and confident use of the drawing tool deployed over the entire page. In addition, her quick grasp is reflected by the high speed with which she draws. She knows how to express herself clearly and in a way that will make everyone around her be caught in her spell. She likes this attention knows how to attract it and use it to influence her environment – these facts may be concluded from the fact that she applies intense pressure on the drawing tool and from the line's high quality. On the other hand, the high pressure she applies also indicates that she is a very stubborn and willful child – in some of her drawings she even tears down the page in few places.

Gathering the facts

When combining all the graphical indicators listed above, we are able to identify the violent behavior that is reported by her parents. Nevertheless, it's evident from her drawings that violence is a default outlet for the intense frustration that she experiences, indicated by the final drawing result, which is dense and overloaded. The violence described by her parents and the frustration expressed by her drawings might, in extreme situations be targeted not only against others but also against herself. A real-life example for such self-destructive tendencies is her self-induced vomiting when people part from her against her will or ask her to behave in a way which is unacceptable for her.
